The LCA standards are designed to cover specific legionella control services but there are some cases where different aspects of one thing are covered by several categories. The LCA publish a guidance document to what is included and excluded in our areas of interest. We also include section A in each service standard that covers scope with what is included and what is excluded.
Despite this, there has been some confusion over where thermostatic mixing valves (TMVs) and thermostatic mixing taps (TMTs) are covered in LCA standards. TMVs and TMTs generally require several different legionella control tasks that are covered by different LCA standards.
- Temperature testing – testing the temperature of the input hot and cold water to the TMV/TMT - paragraph 59a of L8. This task is covered by the Hot and Cold Water Monitoring and Inspection LCA standard.
- Cleaning, descaling and disinfection valves or strainers – keeping the system clean – paragraph 59e of L8. This task is covered by the Cleaning and Disinfection LCA standard.
- Failsafe testing – testing the function of the TMV/TMT to ensure it operates properly – paragraph 59g of L8. This task is covered by the Hot and Cold Water Monitoring and Inspection LCA standard.
- Mechanical servicing – testing the function of the TMV/TMT to ensure it operates properly – paragraph 59g of L8. This task is covered by the Plant and Equipment LCA standard.
- Design and installation – choosing the correct valve for the application – paragraph 75 of L8. This task is covered by the Plant and Equipment LCA standard.
- Commissioning – ensuring the valve performs as designed – paragraph 77 of L8. This task is covered by the Plant and Equipment LCA standard.
The content of these different categories reflect the different technical complexities of each task.
